Meet the Club Taking the Fear out of Finances for Young People
CIC caught up with Fabiha Khatun, the founder of Money Talks Club, to learn more about the journey behind her mission to address the lack of financial education in schools, and build financial literacy among young adults.
Money Talks Club Founder, Fabiha Khatun
CIC: So Fabiha, could you tell us a bit about your background – what experiences led you to feel so passionately about the cause of improving financial literacy? And what led to you setting up your business?
“WITH NOTHING BUT A TISSUE AND A PEN, I SPENT SIX HOURS DRAFTING WHAT WOULD BECOME THE BLUEPRINT FOR MY BUSINESS. ON THAT TISSUE, I OUTLINED MY VISION TO TEACH FINANCIAL LITERACY TO YOUNG PEOPLE IN A FUN, INTERACTIVE WAY, USING ROLE PLAYS.”
Fabiha: I was 17, fresh out of school and started a career in the world of property management and lettings. Let me tell you, it was like a crash course in "adulting" that I wasn't ready for. I was suddenly trying to figure out my payslip, questioning how to make my money work for me, and realising that the stock market wasn't just a fancy term for kitchen inventory. And then there was the tenancy agreement – a document that might as well have been written in another language.
During my time in property management, it hit me how many people were just as clueless about renting homes or understanding their own tenancy agreements. I knew deep down I needed to do something about it. The last job I had drained every bit of enthusiasm from me, and there I was, unsure of my next step. I found myself sitting by the river daily, asking the universe, "What now?"
In search of answers, I turned to listening to entrepreneurs share their stories of failures and successes. They became my distant mentors, off ering lessons in health, finance, and business. A recurring theme emerged from their stories: a lack of financial education in schools. This was my lightbulb moment.
Then came the day that would set everything in motion – stuck watching paint dry on a door frame to prevent the paint from smudging if the door closed. With nothing but a tissue and a pen, I spent six hours drafting what would become the blueprint for my business. On that tissue, I outlined my vision to teach financial literacy to young people in a fun, interactive way, using role plays. It was the most unconventional start, but it marked the beginning of Money Talks Club.
CIC: What problem – or problems – is your business trying to solve, and how?
Fabiha: Money Talks Club is all about cracking the finance code in a way that's as fun and simple as playing a game. To transform the daunting world of finance into something young game-changers can easily grasp and get excited about. From property and taxes to investing and entrepreneurship, making these topics engaging through role play, interactive games, and real life scenarios. It's finance, made relatable and empowering for the next generation.
CIC: What does this look like in terms of the products and services you’re offering?
Fabiha: I wanted to break the mould with workshops that strictly ban the use of PowerPoint and tedious worksheets. I am on a mission to revolutionise financial education by unleashing the power of creativity. Instead of "death by PowerPoint," my workshops are interactive experiences where learning comes alive through engaging activities.
CIC: How did you hear about Creative Impact Club, and what was your experience like working with the CIC members?
Fabiha: My journey to Creative Impact Club began while I was searching for mentorship to turn my ideas into reality. It was the Wayfinder London Business Hub that directed me to the wonderful Avalyn and Nick. Joining with them and the CIC members has been transformative for my business and me.
Through this journey, I’ve not only learned and grown professionally but have also found a sense of belonging and confidence I hadn't known before. My mentors at the Creative Impact Club quickly became friends, offering support, wisdom, and encouragement every step of the way.
CIC: What was the output that was agreed, and how did it turn out? How has it helped your business?
Fabiha: Reaching out to Avalyn and Nick was a significant turn in my journey. They introduced me to George who was an instructional designer leading to the creation of my first course on property. He helped craft the course to be filled with games and hands-on strategies for the very dry subject of renting. George, also having a career in secondary education, transformed the content to resonate deeply with young minds while making it an informative learning journey.
Souky was my finance mentor, to help establish a financially sound business. Her guidance was more than just mentorship; it was support through my most challenging business hurdles. Through this, I conducted extensive market research in colleges and engaged with key decision makers in the council.
Money Talks Club is revolutionising financial education - transforming the daunting world of finance into something young game-changers can easily grasp and get excited about. Finance: made relatable and empowering for the next generation.
